Breathtaking views of Arrábida. Beaches, Castles & Vineyards. Wine tasting.

From EUR 46

This tour takes us to discover one of the most beautiful areas surrounding Lisbon.

The magnificent and green Serra da Arrábida, west of Setúbal, shares its slopes with the vineyards and olive groves of Azeitão and Palmela to the North, and with beautiful beaches and Atlantic cliffs to the South.

From the top of its peak, the Serra de Arrábida offers us the most breathtaking views south of the river Tagus, stretching from the immense blue of the ocean, through to the green of the fields and vineyards.

Throughout the day the landscape of the Serra da Arrábida will accompany our itinerary, from the Castle of Palmela to the East, to the promontory of Cape Espichel, where the Arrábida massif ends, where the sunset bathes the Atlantic cliffs, and dinosaurs have roamed for millions of years.

This tour transports us from the intense life of the city of Lisbon to the calm, contemplative places of the breathtaking landscape, where we climb to the peaks of the Serra, and then go down to the white sand beaches and transparent waters.

In the morning we start our journey by crossing the Tagus River on the 25 de Abril bridge, where we stop off at the Cristo Rei sanctuary viewpoint on the South bank of the Tagus to admire the fabulous views over Lisbon.

We then continue on to Palmela, to visit its medieval castle, which, in addition to its magnificent 360º views, introduces us to both the Church of Santiago, which was built in the late 15th Century, and to the ruins of the 12th Century Church of Santa Maria, which was destroyed by the earthquake of 1755.

The visit to the castle of Palmela will be an excuse to discuss a crucial moment in Portuguese history - the crisis of 1383-85 and the war with Castille, whose defeat at the Battle of Aljubarrota led to the emergence of the second dynasty of Portugal,  celebrated for the Discoveries of the 15th and 16th Centuries.

At Azeitão we visit a winery of a renowned wine company and experience a wine tasting (included).

Our itinerary takes us to the Serra da Arrábida Natural Park, where we drive to its peak, to admire the fabulous and infinite views of the ocean, the bay of Setubal, and the Troia Peninsula.

We stop for lunch in Setúbal, a fishing town known for its excellent fish and seafood restaurants.
The tour continues in the afternoon to Sesimbra, an old fishing village, which is nowadays very popular for its excellent beaches and good fish restaurants. In Sesimbra we also visit its medieval castle, and appreciate its panoramic views of the town and the vast horizon of the ocean.

The trip continues to its last stage with a visit to Cape Espichel and the majestic Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Mua Stone,

which was built in the 18th Century to welcome pilgrims who had been visiting for centuries on a pilgrimage that has roots dating back to an old legend from the 14th Century.
