The Cistercian monks dedicated themselves to agriculture in their extensive fertile lands, which were irrigated by the rivers Alcoa and Baça, where they applied innovative techniques for that period of time. The monastery had a considerable impact on the settling of this region. Its library was one of the largest medieval libraries in Portugal, and many members of the Royal Family were buried in the monastery during the 13th and 14th Centuries.

This tour takes us about 130 kms north of Lisbon, where we also visit the village of Nazaré, known for its beautiful beaches, huge waves that challenge surfers at the famous North Beach, and for the fish and shellfish gastronomy, for the magnificent landscapes of its coast, and its prominence as a place of worship, whose origin goes back to the legend of Our Lady of Nazareth.

On the return to Lisbon we visit the historical village of Óbidos, which has been inhabited by the Celts, Romans, Arabs and Christians since 1148. The village retains its medieval appearance, surrounded by walls and crowned by a castle.
